How does GasOwl work?
The Hardware
GasOwl hardware consists of two battery-powered GasScales that sit underneath your gas bottles, and a battery-powered Communication Hub that sends data from your gas bottles directly to the cloud and to the GasOwl App, without using your internet.
The App
The GasOwl App tells you everything you want to know about your gas usage - what you've got, how you're using it over time, how much you're using by weight, predicted date it will be empty, when the bottles are changed, and if there's any unusual usage.
GasOwl will let you know when to order, or you can automate the ordering request to your favourite gas supplier so you don’t have to think about gas again!

I have GasScales at my house - how do I do use them?

Where will the GasOwl system work?
Anywhere in New Zealand, Australia and North America. It uses a radio signal that is present in most towns and cities.
Rural areas or some areas not in coverage may need an additional piece of kit called a gateway (a small device that plugs into your Router, with no programming or set up to do). We can advise.
How is the GasOwl kit installed?
The gas bottles are removed from their fittings, the scales put in place and the bottles returned to position on top of the scales and connected to their fittings again. You can do it yourself or ask your local plumber or gasfitter to do it for you. The surface beneath the scales must be hard and level.
How easy is it to get the bottles on the scales?
Super easy! The bottles are simply tilted and rolled on to the scales without any fuss. No lifting, nothing special is needed.
Do I still have to switch the valves over?
You can open both valves if your gas appliances work better that way. However the recommendation is to close one and only use one at a time so that you can manage emptying the gas bottle properly while having your next one ready to use.
What are the scales made from, and where?
The scales are robust, made of stainless steel with an internal metal frame, some really clever electronics and a long-life battery. Dreamed up, designed, tested, proven, safety-certified, made and supported in New Zealand. The GasOwl system is a world-first!
How long will the GasScales last?
The GasScales are robust and designed to last at least 25 years but will likely last longer. The battery is expected to last around 6 years (replaceable by a trained technician) and there’s a 3 year warranty. There are no moving parts.
Is the GasOwl equipment safe around gas?
Yes. The equipment has all the required safety certifications for NZ and Australia and each set is labelled with its registered safety certification number.
What happens to my GasOwl kit if I sell my house?
Take the kit with you if you wish, or leave it in place as a selling point. You can sign off as the owner of the kit and the new owner can create an account and sign the kit on to their GasOwl app.
If the shower goes cold does it mean the bottle is empty?
No! It just means the gas level is too low to drive your shower, especially if it’s cold weather. There may still be around 10% or more of a bottle that can be accessed for cooking and washing.
To get the best value from your bottles flick the valve over to the full bottle for a shower and then back to the emptier bottle for the daily cooking and washing until it is completely empty. GasOwl helps you know when to do that.
Can GasOwl be used for gases other than LPG?
Yes. They can be calibrated for any type of gas in bottles up to 200kg (including bottle weight). Please contact the GasOwl team to enquire about suitability.

A Kiwi-designed-and-made set of sturdy stainless steel scales of the highest quality that accurately measure the gas in your 45kg bottles. A small communications hub that is placed on the exterior of your home to enable communications from the scales. It works in most cities and towns. If the type of coverage the hub uses is not present in your location an additional piece of equipment may be required. Let us know your address and we’ll check and let you know.
